The Cévennes extend as part of the Massif Central west of the Rhone Valley to the French A75 highway. They are a paradise for bikers. The area is sparsely populated and, apart from the gorges of the Tarn, hardly attracts large numbers of tourists. There are endless small roads with just as many bends and the landscape offers surprising views of fabulous gorges and vast plateaus at every turn. The differences in altitude between the numerous gorges are somewhere in the region of 500 meters. The highest mountain in the Cévennes is Mont Aigoual at 1565 meters. The Cévennes are characterized by a harsh Atlantic climate in the north and a Mediterranean influence in the south. So if the weather is bad, you can simply head south.
A must-see is the Gorges du Tarn, an impressive gorge that runs through the region. The Kurviger roads along the Tarn River make for a dynamic yet scenic drive. Historic villages such as Sainte-Enimie and La Malène lie along the route and offer opportunities for short stops.
The region is also historically interesting: the Cévennes were a retreat for the Huguenots during the Wars of Religion. Today, numerous old churches and fortified towers still bear witness to this turbulent past. For motorcyclists, a visit to Mont Aigoual, the highest point in the region at 1,567 meters, is well worthwhile. The roads there are challenging and varied – perfect for experienced riders.
