The Massif Central of France lies to the west of the Rhone and covers around 15% of France’s surface area. The Massif extends over the regions of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Occitania and, with a maximum altitude of around 1800 meters and an average altitude of 700 meters, is even more impressive for motorcyclists than the German low mountain ranges, for example. Above all, the sparse population allows you to be completely alone on the countless mountain roads in often sensational scenery. There is simply everything: endless plateaus, rugged canyons and more than 20 mountain peaks higher than 1500 meters.
At the same time, there are two very different climate zones. The rather harsh Atlantic climate in the north-west between Clermont-Ferrand, then in the middle the mountains of the Auvergne, and in the south the Mediterranean Cevennes, Mont Lozère, the gorges of the Tarn and the Grands Causses National Park. Depending on the time of year, you can always find tours in pleasant temperatures, as the hot Mediterranean climate of the Cévennes can be a real challenge from June onwards.
For those who like to ride around bends, love sensational landscapes and enjoy longer tours, a tour to the French Massif Central is just the thing.
